GTA 6 region restrictions

GTA 6 code redemption is tied to the region associated with your platform account, and the rule is not the same on both consoles. Rockstar Support’s “Platforms, Editions, and Versions” article, updated 24 June 2026 and rechecked on 11 August 2026, states that restrictions are based on the account region and that a version bought in a different region must match the region of the platform account. It recommends buying and playing from a retailer in the country of your account to avoid activation problems.

The same article then publishes the detail most coverage leaves out: the PlayStation country groups themselves. There are nine of them, and they name sixty-three countries between them. Xbox is treated differently in a single sentence: codes purchased are not region-locked. So the answer to “will my code work?” depends first on the console, and only one of the two carries a country list at all.

This page reproduces that list in full rather than summarising it. A reader in Switzerland, Croatia or Paraguay does not need to know the shape of the rule; they need to find their own country, and read which group it sits in.

The region rule arrived with the 24 June 2026 support article that also covers platforms, editions and versions, published alongside the pre-order announcement of the same date. It was not issued as a separate policy note, which is why it is easy to miss: the country groups sit at the end of a long article about editions.

WastedStars first summarised this page from the commercial announcement alone, which publishes only the general account-region rule. Rereading the support article in full on 11 August 2026 revealed the PlayStation country groups and the Xbox exception, and the page was rewritten the same day. On 18 August 2026 it was deepened again, this time to print the sixty-three country names instead of describing them, after a source inventory showed that the rule was published here while the list itself was not.

That sequence is worth stating plainly, because it repeats: a summary keeps the rule and loses the enumeration, and the enumeration is what a reader actually checks. The article still does not publish an equivalent list for Xbox, because none is needed under its own wording, and it still does not describe what happens to a mismatched code beyond warning about activation problems.

On Xbox, the support article states that purchased codes are not region-locked, and it prints no country list. On PlayStation, the code must match the country group your account is registered to, and these are the nine groups as published on 24 June 2026 and rechecked on 11 August 2026.

One dated exception deserves its own line. The article says that product codes in Japan expire 170 days after the issuance date, which it identifies as the launch date of 19 November 2026, because of regional regulations. A Japanese code is not something to leave unredeemed indefinitely.

A country absent from every group is not covered by the published lists, and the article offers no fallback for that case.

The classic mistake is treating a cheap foreign listing as a bargain because the storefront accepted the payment. Paying is not redeeming. A second mistake is applying the PlayStation rule to Xbox, or the reverse — the article treats them differently and says so. A third is assuming a physical box escapes the rule: the box contains a download code, so the same account-region logic applies.

A fourth is newer, and it comes from confusing two lists that live on two different pages. The publisher storefront answers a separate question about which regions it ships physical orders to; that is a shipping matter, and it is not the same thing as the country groups that govern code redemption. A country can appear in one context and not the other.

The confirmed answer, from the support article updated 24 June 2026 and rechecked 11 August 2026: redemption follows the region of your platform account, an out-of-region purchase must match that account region, PlayStation codes are restricted to nine published country groups covering sixty-three countries, and Xbox codes purchased are not region-locked. Japanese codes carry a 170-day expiry counted from 19 November 2026.

Not confirmed as of 18 August 2026: the outcome of a mismatched redemption, any refund entitlement, whether an unlisted country is served at all, or whether these groups will change before launch. Check your account country before checkout, not after.
