Rockstar staff detail GTA 6’s systems
The presentation was gameplay and the publisher wrote almost nothing. The detail arrived somewhere else: an interview where six named Rockstar staff speak.
The presentation itself was gameplay, and Rockstar Games wrote almost nothing around it. The detail came from elsewhere: an exclusive interview in the autumn 2026 issue of Dazed, published online on August 26, in which six Rockstar staff are quoted on the record and named with their job titles. That is a different kind of material from a reporter’s impressions of a video, and it is handled differently on this page — the quotations are the publisher speaking, the prose around them is not, and the two are kept apart.
Rob Nelson, head of development and co-studio head at Rockstar North, is quoted on the intent behind the two leads: “We want to enable as much self-expression as possible, without losing the essence of the characters.” He adds: “The thing we love about this medium is the way these characters aren’t empty avatars that you can do whatever you want with. Their story becomes a journey you share with them.” Rupert Humphries, senior vice president of narrative, calls the game “a Bonnie and Clyde-type narrative”, which would make it the first mainline Grand Theft Auto built around a playable couple.
The same feature describes systems that had not been detailed anywhere before. Players can take the two leads together or separately, and swap between them mid-job — driving as one, firing from the passenger seat as the other, with a working in-game phone and social feeds in between. Food affects Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos’s weight, exercise visibly builds muscle, and long stretches away from a bed mark their faces. The world answers back: carrying a rifle down a street draws a reaction. These come from the reporter’s account rather than from a publisher document, and they are marked as reported for that reason.
The interview also puts figures on the production. Rockstar has more than doubled in size since Red Dead Redemption 2; one Los Angeles office works almost solely on the crowds; more than fifty street artists were commissioned for murals in Vice City’s Stockyard; the team handling vehicles is made up of race drivers. Humphries describes the research method in his own words: “We will meet with ex-criminals, law enforcement, club promoters, gun dealers and anyone notorious or influential who’ll take our calls.” One cost claim in the piece is presented by the writer as an online rumour, and it is not repeated here.
Tom’s Hardware added a narrower performance report on August 29. It says Davy Jones watched Rob Nelson play for more than two hours during a Rockstar North demonstration and observed the game running at 30 FPS. When asked about a performance mode, Nelson reportedly said it runs at 30 FPS “for now” and that he would need to consult the technical team about 60 FPS at launch or later. That does not establish a launch cap, a resolution target, a PS5 Pro mode or a later patch: the direct exchange was in a video account that Wasted Stars did not watch, so this remains secondary reporting.
